Charles Russell Stimpson (24 August 1919 – 20 August 1983) was a United States Navy fighter ace in World War II.Charles Russell Stimpson (24 August 1919 – 20 August 1983) was a United States Navy fighter ace in World War II. He was a Grumman F4F Wildcat pilot from Guadalcanal in the summer of 1943, "Skull" Stimpson shot down six Japanese aircraft. He remained with the squadron during its second combat deployment, flying Grumman F6F Hellcats from USS Hornet (CV-12) in the Western Pacific during late 1944. He scored ten more kills, including five confirmed and two probables off Formosa on 14 October.
Capt. Robert Baird was pilot of a Fighter Plane in Marine Night Fighting Squadron VMF(N)-533, Marine Air Group TWENTY-TWO (MAG-22), FOURTH Marine Aircraft Wing, during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of the Ryukyu Islands from 29 June to 6 July 1945. Completing his twentieth mission during this period, Captain Baird maintained night combat air patrol over US surface forces, contributing materially to the success of his squadron in providing protection against enemy aerial attackers.
Lt. Leo Bob McCuddin, VF-20, USS Enterprise, October, 1944. He was famous Navy pilot flew this Hellcat on many of his combat sorties. He flew F6F Hellcats as a pilot with VF-20 off the USS Enterprise from April, 1944. All five of his kills were gained during his combat tour with VF-20. He participated in the attack on the ‘Fuso’ Class battleship and of the sinking of an escorting destroyer during the Battle of the Philippine Sea on October 24th and 25th, 1944.
